The May 1990 issue of the 'Cumbria' magazine has an article about this village. It is set in good farming land, and a that time produced sheep and milk, and a crop of hay. There is a village school, which a google search reveals is St Matthews CE Primary School, and is still open. Pevsner gives the year of the building of the school as 1858, by the same architect as the church, built the previous year.
