The church stood at this site, junction with Cathay Street, having been built in 1839 and demolished in 1979. Outside the church and only a yard from the footpath in Jamaica Road, was the sarcophagus of Field Marshal Sir William Maynard Gomm GCB (1784-1875). He held a continuous commission in the army for 81 years and his awards were buried with him. On 05-03-1980 his awards, that included his Waterloo medal and Field Marshall's baton (inscribed by Queen Victoria) were sold at Sothebys for £26,000-00 and shipped to the USA. His second wife, Elizabeth, who died 30-11-1877 was buried with him. [Also see TQ3578 : Jura House, Plough Way, Rotherhithe, London SE16].
