ST3767 : WWII Target Practice Barge

taken 15 years ago, 3 km from Wick st Lawrence, North Somerset, England

WWII Target Practice Barge
WWII Target Practice Barge
This was one of 2 barges deliberately sunk in WWII to provide target practice for fighter aircraft protecting the cities and ports in the northern Bristol Channel. This is the larger 'barge', really a small coaster, has twin boilers and carried a cargo of ballast.

This area has the second highest tidal range in the world and has many hazards - DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REACH THIS BARGE unless you are fully prepared and have a good knowledge of the local tides and dangers. Please advise the Coastguard if you plan a visit.
