Applying rockfall netting
The rock face shown here is the upper part of one of the crags at NS4274 : Dumbuck Quarry; the photo was taken from a point on the nearby cycle route.

Where the stonework on old buildings overhangs city streets, it is, for safety's sake, often covered in metal mesh. The work being carried out on this rock face is much the same thing, but on a grander scale; as the map makes clear, the crag stands near a main road (the busy A82). The purpose of this metal mesh, which is secured to the rock using anchor bolts, is not to eliminate rockfall entirely (hardly a realistic goal), but rather to ensure that such pieces as do fall will not travel far from the rock face.
Dumbuck Quarry :: NS4274

The quarry, which supplies aggregates for the construction industry, is also known as Dumbuckhill Quarry. It has consumed much of Dumbuck Hill, which was a volcanic plug, located at the edge of the Kilpatrick Hills. The quarry was mothballed in 2011, but its new owners resumed operations there just a few years later.
