Ballygrennan is located on a minor road about 1 km south of Bruff. Despite the tradition that the Earls of Kildare held a castle here, this tower may in fact date from after 1583, a time when Ballygrennan was first granted to William ffox. By 1621 the ffox family had lost possession of Ballygrennan, although they had recovered it again by 1657. By that time the large outer bawn had been built on the north side incorporating a gateway, whose opening can just be seen in the photo. Adjoining the tower are the remains of an early C17 house.
