Castles of Munster: Kilduff, Limerick
This castle is on the outskirts of New Pallas Grean just off the main N24. When in 1583 Moriery Mergagh met his death in the Desmond rebellion, it was said at the time that he had a tower here. If this was indeed Kilduff Castle, it must be assumed that it had just been built. The west and south walls of this tower stand to full height, as many as four storeys evident together with an attic, its windows in the gables surmounted by chimney stacks. A circular bartizan on pyramidal corbels can be seen at the NW corner. Kilduff was held from 1617 until the 1650s by the Hurleys, and in 1667 it passed to the trustees of Erasmus Smith's charity schools, whose tenants were the holders.
