The stone stands almost 26ft high next to Rudston Parish Church of all Saints. Made from Moor Grit Conglomerate from the Late Neolithic Period. This material can be found in the Cleveland Hills inland from Whitby. This view to its wide face looking NE towards the B1253.
The likely source of this tall gritstone monolith was the coastline near Cayton Bay, about 10 miles to the north, and an 18th century excavation indicated that as much of it might be buried underground as was showing above [Rudston in 'Villages of Britain' by Clive Aslet (2010)].
