Memorial to HMS Kelly and War Graves
Memorial to HMS Kelly and War Graves
HMS Kelly was built at Hawthorn Leslies Shipyard in Hebburn and launched in 1938. Sadly the destroyer was sunk in 1941 off Crete and almost half the crew lost their lives. Here 20 of the 27 local sailors who lost their lives are buried. Throughout her service, Kelly was commanded by Lord Louis Mountbatten. Here there is also a memorial to Lord Louis Mountbatten who was assassinated in Ireland in 1979. During his life he retained strong links with Hebburn and the local sailors who served on the Kelly.
