NZ3365 : Vesalius - Suction dredger

taken 15 years ago, near to Tyne Tunnel, South Tyneside, England

Vesalius - Suction dredger
Vesalius - Suction dredger
This dredger is in place and ready to cut a trench in the bed of the River Tyne to receive 4 pre-cast concrete tunnel sections to create a second vehicle tunnel. The river at this point is approximately 270 metres wide. Suction dredging, it is claimed, will cause less disturbance for fish than the cutting method. The water and silt (400,000 cubic metres) will be pumped directly by pipeline to Tyne Dock, South Shields.
