The Trent and Mersey Canal was opened fully by 1777. It is 93.5 miles long, from Preston Brook (near Runcorn) to Derwent Mouth (east of Shardlow). There are 76 locks to enable the canal to cross hills where it could not be routed any other way. The engineer responsible for planning and engineering the canal was James Brindley, who died in 1772 before the project was finished,
