H.M.S. Trincomalee: Hartlepool Maritime Experience
The capstan, showing just two of the bars in place (one fitted into each slot). The capstan was a device for providing tractive force for such heavy tasks as raising the ship's anchor (the stock of which is shown here - NZ5133 : H.M.S. Trincomalee: Hartlepool Maritime Experience) or winching the ship alongside a wharf. Many crew-members would man the capstan, with two men to a bar - and to provide yet more "pull", the capstan's shaft was extended to the deck below NZ5133 : H.M.S. Trincomalee: Hartlepool Maritime Experience where yet more manual effort could be applied.
