Life Brigade Watch House, Cullercoats
The Watch House NZ3671 : Fishermen's Institute was designed by Frank West Rich, who designed Turnbull's Warehouse and Bolbec Hall in Newcastle. A pre-existing clock tower was incorporated in the design. The Cullercoats Volunteer Life Brigade, the second to be formed after Tynemouth, was formed after 1864 and the Watch House constructed between 1877 and 1879. The duty of the Life Brigade was to assist the Coast Guard in their endeavours to save life from shipwreck.
The building is now the home of a community centre, the Watch House Club. It features in several paintings when the village was the base for a thriving artists' colony between 1870 and 1920. These include 'Watching the Tempest' by leading American artist Winslow Homer (1881) LinkExternal link LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
