Hampstead Heath - North End
Hampstead Heath - North End
Also known as Sandy Heath, the trees are largely bare in this December image. The majority of trees on the gravel soil that makes up this part of the heath are Beech or Hornbeam. There are also Silver Birch trees which have much shorter lives than the other species, succumbing early to fungal attack and usually dead after around 60 years. The fungal attack weakens the trunk of the tree and many snap in strong winds - there is an example on the right of the photo. There are also many thickets of Holly on this part of the heath.
