Hazels recently coppiced in Black Park
These hazels were coppiced in autumn 2009, cut down just above ground level. Hazel Woodland Products Link
have a good description of the cycle, which is a method of woodland management practised from Neolithic times. From the drastic-looking cutting shown here, a crop of straight sticks or poles will be available in 7 to 12 years. Coppicing is also beneficial for wildlife and plants, as the open area lets in sunlight, and the area does not become overgrown scrubland.
