Hazels recently coppiced in Black Park
Hazels recently coppiced in Black Park
These hazels were coppiced in autumn 2009, cut down just above ground level. Hazel Woodland Products LinkExternal link have a good description of the cycle, which is a method of woodland management practised from Neolithic times. From the drastic-looking cutting shown here, a crop of straight sticks or poles will be available in 7 to 12 years. Coppicing is also beneficial for wildlife and plants, as the open area lets in sunlight, and the area does not become overgrown scrubland.
