The street is now pedestrianised as 'Blue Carpet Square' NZ2564 : Bollards, 'Blue Carpet Square'.
The Laing Art Gallery was built in 1904 as a gift to the City of Newcastle from Alexander Laing, who had made his money in the wine and spirits trade, but initially opened with no art collection.
