The timber building began as a small thatched Victorian summer house, built in 1861 by James Hobrough, the then owner of what has since become May Gurney's boatyard. The cottage consisted of one ground floor room with a Victorian fireplace, a small rear hallway and a loft room reached by a ladder. A sitting room, another bedroom, a kitchen and a long verandah were added at a later time. The wherryman John Fox was born here. He lived in this cottage with his family all his life, until 1998. The Grade II listed building - it is one of the few remaining mid-Victorian summer houses and had become a landmark by the riverside - began to deteriorate due to repeated floodings which occurred due to the river's profile having changed over the years. Being of special architectural interest prevented its demolition and eventually the cottage was moved 400 metres upstream from its original location beside the boatyard.
