NZ2464 : Co-operative Department Store, Newgate Street
taken 16 years ago, near to Gateshead, England

Co-operative Department Store, Newgate Street
Built in 1931-2 to a design by L G Ekins (C.W.S. Architect) for the Newcastle Co-operative Society Ltd. in the Art Deco style. There are four storeys and attics with two towers, one with a barometer NZ2464 : Newcastle Co-op barometer and one with a clock NZ2464 : Newcastle Co-op clock. The building curves round the corner of Darn Crook (now St. Andrew's Street) on the right NZ2464 : Darn Crook (St Andrew Street) from Newgate Street. The main building was closed by the Co-op who now only retain the ground floor Food Hall. The building certainly no longer looks at its best, if it really ever did.
