Fenwick’s department store is Newcastle’s most famous shop, and one of the earliest department stores in the city, a concept brought to Newcastle from Paris. It is particularly loved for its Christmas window dressing which has captivated generations of children and seems to start around September NZ2464 : Fenwicks window, Christmas 2009
The five storey store built in 1913 possesses an attractive white stone colonnaded frontage, including ornate wreath carvings between each column, and iron railings on the roof. A Fenwick's store at this site dates back to 1882.
