Network 150 Day - (07) Network SouthEast EMU Class 421/2 No. 1249
Photographed at Waterloo Station in October 1988, at the Ian Allan Network 150 Day. It may have been one of the exhibits, but more likely it was just sitting here ready to undertake a routine journey. But today it is of interest because British Rail and its Network SouthEast are no more, and the livery has gone too. Almost all of this class of electric multiple unit trains have gone too, although there may still be a couple working some obscure branch line, but not in this livery. Designed for the former Southern Region third rail electrified system, this unit was built in 1970 by British Rail's York works. The front unit is numbered 76623. These units were known for their unlamented slam doors.
