Hut base associated with WWII gun emplacements
Hut base associated with WWII gun emplacements
Although it has become overgrown, the outline of this hut base, positioned at approximately NS 39979 77034, is still clearly visible. Its long axis is oriented SW-NE, and the line of one of its shorter walls can be seen in the foreground. Its longer walls are both fringed with vegetation. This was one of a group of five huts in this part of the accommodation camp.

There are often cattle in this field (although not on this occasion), and the ground shows signs of their trampling. The photo was taken after long-lasting snow and ice cover on the field had melted, but before the normally very muddy ground had completely thawed out.
WWII remains at Kilmalid :: NS4077
The structures at Kilmalid are associated with a Second World War Anti-Aircraft Battery; see LinkExternal link for Canmore's description of the site; that article includes aerial photographs of the gun emplacements, taken before they were cleared away during the construction of a roundabout. Remains (mostly hut bases) of the associated accommodation camp extended in an arc from about NS 3991 7694 to about NS 4405 7705, but they were later cleared to make way for a manufacturing plant (opened in 2012); see LinkExternal link for a map of the WWII remains that were visible when I visited.
