Structure associated with WWII gun emplacements
Structure associated with WWII gun emplacements
Among the trees in this area are some of the most interesting remains of the buildings of the accommodation camp. The tree cover makes capturing images of this structure as a whole impossible, but it has probably contributed to its being particularly well preserved.

The base shown here is raised up, and here, uniquely among the remains in the area, a set of steps is visible, leading up into the building. The long axis of the building was oriented SW to NE, and the steps are located at the middle of what would have been the short wall on the NE side.

See NS3977 : Structure associated with WWII gun emplacements for a slightly wider view of this side of the building, taken on the previous day.

On the wartime-era aerial photograph of the site, this building is located immediately to the SE of what looks like a long ridge made of earth (possibly an earthen blast wall), and it stands between a group of five huts to the NE and another group of seven huts to the SW. There are traces of a brick wall just a few metres away, on the NW side of the structure, so this building was something more substantial than a hut (the huts had arching roofs, like those of an Anderson shelter, although on a larger scale).
WWII remains at Kilmalid :: NS4077
The structures at Kilmalid are associated with a Second World War Anti-Aircraft Battery; see LinkExternal link for Canmore's description of the site; that article includes aerial photographs of the gun emplacements, taken before they were cleared away during the construction of a roundabout. Remains (mostly hut bases) of the associated accommodation camp extended in an arc from about NS 3991 7694 to about NS 4405 7705, but they were later cleared to make way for a manufacturing plant (opened in 2012); see LinkExternal link for a map of the WWII remains that were visible when I visited.
