Keelman's Hospital, City Road
Built in 1701, the building comprises almshouses grouped around a central courtyard. The hospital provided accommodation for widows and children of deceased keelmen, or for those who were ill or destitute. The keelmen worked on the keels, large boats that carried the coal from the banks of the River Tyne to the waiting collier ships Link
The money for the Hospital was raised by a levy on the keelmen themselves of 4d (2p) each tide. The building is now used as student accommodation.
