Coronation Street outdoor set
Looking from the junction with Viaduct Street. The external set used for the filming of Coronation Street was built in 1982. Back story dates the building of the street to 1902. Up until 1968 the external scenes were shot inside studios on another part of the Granada site. In 1968 an outdoor set was constructed, mainly using the earlier indoor set, erected on scaffolding. The 1982 set was built with real reused bricks, although a lack of internal walls means that the chimneys have been made of fibreglass.
Between 1988 and 1999 the street was the highlight of the Granada Studios Tour. The closure of the attraction has allowed the outdoor set to be expanded with new buildings around Rosamond Street, at the opposite end of the terrace.
The look of the street is based on terraced houses on Archie Street in Salford, now demolished, which were shown in the end credits of early episodes.
