The Cromford & High Peak Railway linked the Cromford Canal near that village with Whaley Bridge on the Peak Forest Canal and was constructed in the early 1830s with a series of level stretches linked by rope-worked inclined planes. The railway's workshops were built at the eastern end of the line on the bank of the canal. They were closed in the 1960s but have since been restored by Derbyshire County Council as an interpretive centre for visitors, with many of the former tools and equipment still in place. The main line of the railway ran on the far side of the buildings seen here and almost immediately commenced to rise under the adjacent turnpike road (now the A6) and up the Sheep Pasture Incline. The tall white post to the left was part of the signalling system between the railway employees at the foot and top of the incline to indicate that a rake of wagons could be raised or lowered.
