Bolbec Hall was built in 1907 by Frank Rich for the Literary and Philosophical Society whose building (the 'Lit & Phil') is the Greek Revival building to the right NZ2463 : Newcastle Literary & Philosophical Society, Westgate Road.

The Society was established in 1793 and held innovative meetings including a demonstration of electric lighting by Sir Joseph Swan in 1880. Women members were admitted in 1804, and Robert Stephenson was President between 1855 and 1859. Rooms in the Bolbec Hall were let out to provide an income for the Society.
