SD6296 : Put-in at the Crook of Lune

Put-in at the Crook of Lune
Put-in at the Crook of Lune
The section of the River Lune from Crook of Lune down to any of three points west of Sedbergh is a popular one with canoeists, especially when levels are a bit low for other rivers in the area, as was the case on the day this photo was taken. The road is narrow and bendy, and is much used by tractors with trailers, so most canoeists park up at the main road and walk down to the river to avoid causing conflict. The put-in is then river right, on the downstream side of the bridge, as seen here through the right hand arch. Paddlers cross the river to the left channel to pass the island which lies just downstream. The level shown here was a bit of a bump and scrape over the shingle rapids which characterise the first mile or so, but was fine for the section lower down where the river is enclosed in rocky gorgelets.
