Burton House, Burton-in-Kendal
Built in the late 18C; Pevsner (in Buildings of England) considered it 'splendid'. The windows are more widely spaced than in many Georgian houses. Pevsner always describes houses such as this, with small windows on the second floor, as 'two and a half storeys'; the rooms on the top floor were probably for servants. The lower wings, on each side, connect to small pavilions with pediments out of sight behind trees.
