Hampstead Heath: Pond Number 3 (The Mixed Bathing Pond)
The Hampstead Heath Ponds were created by the New River Company by damming up Hampstead Brook. This is the uppermost of what used to be four ponds until the lowermost was filled in by the London County Council around 1892. Formal permission for public bathing in this pond seems to have started around 1880, and the 1896 edition of the Ordnance Survey mapping shows a "Bathing Shed" where the existing facilities are now, in the distance.
