Whiteout on Carn Gluasaid
Whiteout on Carn Gluasaid
I expect this will prove controversial with some, but this was the view for a long way along the east ridge of Carn Gluasaid. Did not matter if you looked up, down, 360 around, this is what you would see. Some of the image is ground, some sky - probably 50:50 but it was a guess at the time.
The only sensory information obtainable was through gravity, the aspect of slope was easy to gauge and provided feedback if going off bearing. Going off bearing was not an option though. Fresh deposits of windslab on southern slopes could avalanche, and I had been avalanched in a whiteout before, only realising it when I reached the bottom and started to get buried. There were big cornices on the north side of the ridge, the next step could easily be your last if off route.
Fortunately prolonged true whiteouts are not too common, I have gone several winters without experiencing one. It only takes one blade of grass to show, to completely change the situation and make navigation many times easier. Occasionally a stone would appear and gave a great sense of relief, a bit like spotting land after crossing sea. Then it would recede and I was back inside the ping-pong ball, rather frightened.
