London Road Gardens
London Road Gardens
The irregular terrain at the eastern end of the Gardens has less to do with William Playfair's landscaping skills than the fact that it was originally a whinstone quarry by the name of Upper Quarryholes. Believed to have been of mediaeval origin, its name was perpetuated by a farm that disappeared when the curved southern extension of Easter Road was built to meet Abbey Mount at around the same time that London Road was laid in the 1820s.
