The town buried in the fields here was built around AD 650 and occupied for some 200 years. The settlement probably came to this site from Ad Gefrin (Yeavering) NT9230 : Ad Gefrin or Yeavering. Aerial photographs show the presence of many timber buildings NT9433 : Reconstructed Dark Age House, Maelmin Heritage Trail, including great halls similar to those at Yeavering. The town was surrounded by a substantial wooden palisade.
