The organization (formerly known as St Dunstan's) is a charity providing support, rehabilitation and respite care to blind ex-service personnel of the British Armed Forces. The Charity was started in 1915.

The main base at Ovingdean, Brighton was designed in the shape of an aeroplane by Francis Lorne. It was completed in 1938
