North Blyth, Base of North Side Staithes
These staithes are later 19th century in date. Railways from the surrounding area would have transported coal from the many collieries to here, before its loading into collier ships. The various map editions show a series of mooring and signal posts through time for the direction of the ships and the trains. The staithes here are a long line. Elsewhere they are noted as being end-on or span inlets of the river shore for the ease of continuous movement of the trains or wagons employed. These are some of the last remaining staithes in this area of Northumberland.
