Enormous winding engine, Askern Main Colliery
Yates & Thom built three very large horizontal twin tandem compound steam winding engines. The one at Astley Green Colliery survives but the two at Askern were scrapped in 1981 and 1982. These were 3000 horsepower with two sets of cylinders 36" & 60" bores by 72" stroke. The right hand piston tail rod is blurred as these engines were hard at it in revenue service. The driver is in the elevated cabin in the left background.
