St. Patrick's Day Parade: Armagh 2010 :: H8745

The two largest St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th) 2010 parades in the North of Ireland were held in Belfast and Armagh. St. Patrick is Ireland’s best known patron saint.

The Armagh parade is particularly significant as it was in that city where St. Patrick himself established a church in the 5th Century A.D. – Armagh is today regarded as the ‘ecclesiastical capital of Ireland’ – being the seat of an Anglican and a Roman Catholic diocese, as well as being the home of the Primate of Ireland (Cardinal Seán Brady).

The 2010 parade was organised by the local authority, Armagh City and District Council, and departed the Palace Demesne at 2.30pm to complete a route through the centre of the city, finishing at Market Place, below the Anglican Cathedral. The weather was relatively warm and crowds lined the narrow streets of the historic centre – providing a carnival atmosphere.
