The Sanctuary knocker, Durham Cathedral
The Sanctuary knocker, Durham Cathedral
A replica of the original. In the middle ages the cathedral provided a sanctuary for fugitives simply by knocking on the Cathedral door. The fugitives were given 37 days to organise their affairs and decide whether to stand trial or leave the country by the nearest port.
