The building was designed by Dewjoc Architects and completed in April 2004. It houses an Environmental Research Facility and, as appropriate, features many green technologies in its construction and operation NZ2465 : Great North Museum: Hancock. The large roof area collects rainwater for use in the toilets, which is stored in huge tanks both above and below ground LinkExternal link
