Greenbooth and Naden :: SD8516
The Naden Valley contains four reservoirs (Greenbooth, Naden Lower, Naden Middle and Naden Higher) which were built to supply water to Rochdale. There is also a network of waymarked footpaths for walkers. The three Naden reservoirs date back to the nineteenth century whilst the largest, Greenbooth reservoir, was created in 1961 by flooding the village of Greenbooth.

Before the reservoirs were built, the valleys were once a thriving upland community. Greenbooth village, now submerged by the reservoir, had a woollen mill which provided jobs for the villagers. There was a coal pit nearby and farms in the valleys provided food for its inhabitants. Farming, in the form of sheep grazing, continues on the moorland.
