Kilndown is a hamlet, established in Victorian times by Viscount Beresford.
The hamlet has a pub, school, Victorian church and cricket club.

Lych Gates

A lychgate or as two separate words lych gate, is a gateway covered with a roof found at the entrance to a traditional English churchyard. The name comes from the Old English for a corpse (lic) and was traditionally where the clergy met the corpse for burial. It was also a shelter for the pall bearers.

The church was built and endowed mainly by Field Marshal Viscount Beresford, one of Wellington's generals in the Napoleonic Wars, who purchased the nearby Bedgebury Park estate in 1836. Built as a chapel of ease to Goudhurst, the church was consecrated in 1841, and Kilndown became a separate parish in 1843.
Anthony Salvin started building this church in 1839 on behalf of Viscount Beresford, but the Viscount's 20-year-old stepson Alexander Beresford Hope took over soon afterwards, turning the sandstone Gothic Revival building into "the Ecclesiological Society's showcase church" with its extensive interior decoration and lavish fittings. It was repaired after wartime bomb damage.
