Duxhurst Place
Duxhurst Place
Duxhurst was the site of The Duxhurst Hospital for Lady Inebriates, founded by Lady Henry Somerset of Reigate Priory in 1894. Lady Henry Somerset was a stalwart of the temperance movement and built a model village here for the care and recuperation of women affected by alcoholism, many from the East End of London. For more information see the excellent article on her and her work at LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) .

The current Duxhurst Place is on the site of a building called The Nest, used to house children of women being cared for in the village. Whether Duxhurst Place is the original building or a replacement building on the site is not clear.
