Stan Cullis played his first senior game for Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club in 1935 at the age of eighteen, and became captain during the following season. He played for England on ten occasions, but his best years were taken away during World War II. His last game for Wolves was in 1947, when injury forced his retirement as a player, but by 1948 he was the team's manager at the age of just thirty-one, and the period through to the early 1960s was the most successful in the history of the club. Stan died in 2001 at the age of 84 years.
The bronze statue is by James Walter Butler, MBE RA, and stands 2.75 metres high on a pedestal of reconstituted stone with black marble capping. It was unveiled in August 2003. Link
