Sign for the Coach and Horses
A common pub name in all parts of Britain since the 17th century. The arrival of Hackney carriages, forerunners of modern taxis, and later the introduction of stage coaches meant that there was plenty of traffic on the roads. Inns were natural stopping places, providing refreshment for both horses and humans.
