Coniston Water
At around five miles long, and with a maximum depth of 184 feet, Coniston Water is the third largest of the lakes.
Coniston Water provided inspiration for Arthur Ransome's famous children's book 'Swallows and Amazons', and Peel Island, has been identified as the 'Wild Cat Island' in the book.
Coniston was the site of the world water speed record bids of Donald Campbell (23 March 1921 - 4 January 1967) which culminated in his tragic death on 4th January, 1967, whilst attempting to reach a speed of 300 mph.
