Royal Border Bridge

Royal Border Bridge spans the River Tweed between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Tweedmouth. It is a Grade I listed railway viaduct LinkExternal link built between 1847 and 1850, when it was opened by Queen Victoria. The engineer who designed it was Robert Stephenson (son of George Stephenson). It was built for the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway and is still in regular use today, as part of the East Coast Main Line.
The bridge is 659 metres long. It has 28 arches, constructed of brick but faced with stone.

East Coast Main Line

The East Coast Main Line is a 393 mile long high speed electrified railway between London and Edinburgh, via Peterborough, Doncaster, York and Newcastle. It was constructed between 1846 & 1871 by several different rail companies.

River Tweed

The River Tweed is 97 miles long and flows generally west to east through the Scottish borders. It rises at Tweedsmuir and passes through small towns like Peebles, Selkirk, Melrose, Galashields and Kelso, before entering the North Sea at Berwick on Tweed.

Grade I and Category A listed buildings and structures

Grade I listed buildings and structures are of exceptional, even international importance. There are over 6,000 in the country. Only 2.5% of listed buildings are Grade I listed.
