TQ7708 : Wreck of the Amsterdam

taken 15 years ago, near to Bulverhythe, East Sussex, England

Wreck of the Amsterdam
Wreck of the Amsterdam
The wreck of the Amsterdam, visible only on certain spring tides. The ship ran aground here 26th January 1749 after an eventful maiden voyage that left most crew dead or dying of fever, or dead drunk following a mutiny. A cargo of silver bullion and fine wines inspired widespread looting, with one local man shot dead in the process. Most of the ship is well preserved beneath the clay beach.
