Cartmel Priory
Cartmel Priory
This was the main building and, apart from the gatehouse, is now all that remains of the priory. Construction began in the 12th century and the building survived the dissolution of the monasteries. While the lead was removed from the roof to speed the decay of the building, the walls remained after the local population petitioned to keep what was also their local place of worship.
