This is an old Gateshead road that ran parallel to the river. It was called after the ‘pipe well’ from which wooden pipes carried Gateshead’s water supply. The photo is taken from near its junction with Bridge Street (just above the Swing Bridge). The High Level Bridge crosses high above.
