Jordans: The grave of William Penn
William Penn (1644-1718), the founder of Pennsylvania and a prominent Quaker, is buried in the grounds outside SU9791 : Jordans Quaker Meeting House (1). His gravestone, and that of his second wife Hannah, is the left hand one of the row of five. In accordance with Quaker customs all the headstones are identical and only bear the name of the deceased and the year of their death. Penn died penniless, having returned to England from Pennsylvania in 1701.
