It's hard to tell if these plants are cardoons or globe artichokes, but it is likely that they are cardoons as they are commonly used as decorative plants, though of the same family as artichokes. Carter's "Blue Book of Gardening" Catalogue states of artichoke " It is difficult to think of a more handsome and easily grown plant.."
