Prince Approaches Boston Lodge, Gwynedd
Photographers gathered at the entrance to Boston Lodge railway works, keen to take a record of Prince hauling the longest Victorian train seen on the railway (at least since 1954). The train, consisting of a combination of original and replica vehicles, was composed of the following: 8*11*10*2*5*15*18*19*Van 1. I had the pleasure of travelling in replica carriage 10, on the previous day.
Prince is the oldest working engine on the FR. In fact he is the oldest engine in regular service in the world! He is one of the first four locos built for the FR, in 1863. Originally he had side tanks but was rebuilt to his current shape in 1892, with a large saddle tank. These locos were designed to haul 50 tons of empty slate wagons uphill at 10 mph, he has now proved capable of much more than that.
